Writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s second feature – his first being the coming-of-age drama The Myth Of The American Sleepover – is a heady mix of clanging, overwhelming sound and an observant, lingering camera. About an ordinary teenager (Maika Monroe) pursued by a terrifying, malevolent force, It Follows is both reminiscent of all kinds of classic horror (including John Carpenter’s Halloween) and an intelligent reworking of the genre’s more familiar trappings....

Well, judging by the many trailers and new sun-kissed TV spots that have descended for Death on the Nile, it will be absolutely gorgeous. With a decadent production design and sumptuous lighting which speaks to the hint of glamour (and colonialism) that made Egyptomania so exciting in the 19th and early 20th century, Death on the Nile harkens back to a different era with maximum style and star appeal. Indeed, you can barely watch a frame without seeing a major star or actor on the rise filling the frame....

Though Netflix’s new fantasy series Shadow and Bone is based on the bestselling Grishaverse novels of author Leigh Bardugo, it’s not a straightforward adaptation of the book series that shares its name. In addition to the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the series also incorporates elements from Six of Crows, a duology that is set in the same world, but focused on a very different set of characters. Set two years after the events of Shadow and Bone, Six of Crows is a dramatic heist story set in a different country (Kerch) and starring a set of characters who really don’t take part in the events of the first trilogy....

The introduction of Latverian supervillain Victor von Doom does actually make a lot of sense at this point. Despite being a beloved and often despicable character in Marvel Comics, Doom hasn’t quite hit right in previous Fantastic Four films, having been played by Nip/Tuck’s Julian McMahon in both the 2005 FF movie film and its sequel, and later by Toby Kebbell in Josh Trank’s unfortunate reboot. With yet another reboot on the way under the watchful eye of Marvel maestro Kevin Feige and Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts, it feels like a solid choice to skip the now-pretty damn redundant Doom origin story and have him just appear as an established menace....

As was teased by last week’s cliffhanger, we begin on something of a gloomy note as the unstoppable Flux completely obliterates the Doctor, her companions and the TARDIS. It’s a shock move by Chris Chibnall that ends the series for good with a thirty-second climax that no-one saw coming. Russell T. Davies is really going to have his work cut out retconning this one. No, hang on, I’ve turned over two pages at once....

Doom Patrol Episode 3 This week’s Doom Patrol involved a lot of Nazis getting their ass whupped. As if that alone is not satisfying enough, the bizarre roadtrip episode “Puppet Patrol” has the team realizing how little control they have, and involves a heartbreaking subplot about Larry confronting his double-life, and inner demon/negative energy entity. First up, getting DP out of Cloverton – the citizens of which are none too keen on our misfit heroes – is a welcome switch up....

Doom Patrol Episode 9 The underground is vast, and the story dark and poignant in “Jane Patrol,” the ninth episode of Doom Patrol. While still remaining a super hero show, this installment is a mind screw of a psychological drama that addresses a character’s inner demons, and her unwillingness to (literally) let someone else in. And it all feels very relatable. Following a disturbing scene between young Kay Challis and her sexually abusive father, the episode picks up with the alter Karen banished to the Underground, the unconscious world of Jane’s core personality....

This number, which comes from Warner Bros., makes Dune the first WB/HBO Max hybrid release to open north of $31.6 million at the box office—a record set in March by Godzilla vs. Kong during a period when many theaters were still closed, and social distancing was more strictly enforced. It also beat out studio projections. With that said, it’s admittedly not the type of debut one usually associates with a pop culture phenomenon....

Elden Ring is certainly FromSoftware’s biggest game yet, but like other Soulsborne titles, the story doesn’t hold players’ hands. Gamers have to keep track of their quests and progression without the aid of a checklist, which can leave many scratching their heads when it comes time to actually finish the main story. Like many open-world games, it’s generally a bad idea to rush through Elden Ring and only tackle the “main story....

Smithing Stones will allow you to upgrade standard weapons to higher levels, while Somber Smithing Stones allow you to upgrade special and enhanced weapons. While it’s fairly easy to find basic Smithing Stones that will allow you to see whether or not a weapon is worth upgrading in the first place, it’s significantly more difficult to find some of the better Smithing Stones in the game. Some are so rare that you may only ever find one of them....

Morse had one father, yes – a strained relationship with an estranged man whose dying words to his constable son were that he’d never liked the police – but in Fred Thursday, he also had another....

The subgenre of Sherlock Holmes pastiches in which Sherlock himself is not the focus is slightly larger than you might think. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (yes, that Kareem) has written two novels and a comic book series about Sherlock’s brother Mycroft, while Carole Nelson Douglas wrote eight novels focused on Irene Adler, And yet, Enola Holmes may the most interesting non-Sherlock Sherlock-books, ever. Like Mycroft and Irene Adler, Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) has a close connection with Sherlock, but unlike Irene, Enola does not come from the canon of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but instead, from author Nancy Springer’s imagination....

Though the movie jumps right into the style of its predecessor, with Fleabag-inspired breaking of the fourth wall (director Harry Bradbeer returns to the helm), the filmmakers wisely establish early on that Enola only wants you to think that she has it together. Despite having enough money to open her own detective agency, she has no clients; despite saving the life of love interest Viscount Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) and ensuring he can become a member of Parliament in the last movie, they haven’t really caught up since their awkward goodbye; and despite being reunited with her mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter), the latter is still too busy blowing things up in the name of the suffragette movement to coddle her daughter....

Though Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is that rare Hollywood sequel, prequel, or reboot that doesn’t spend its entire runtime referencing things that happened in its source material, there are still tons of fun Harry Potter references, Easter eggs, and throwbacks hidden within its frames — some more obvious than others. Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 3 I’m going to borrow a page from Teddy’s philosophy that the end is the beginning—at least as it relates to my review of “Cindy Hawkins.” Why? Because by the end of the episode, it occurred to me that viewers’ enjoyment of Fear the Walking Dead’s seventh season will rely heavily upon whether you accept Morgan and Strand as archrivals. This is an important consideration because everybody else will likely find themselves caught in the crossfire of competing ideologies....

Happy Death Day to Us is the working title for the threequel, as returning franchise-spanning director Landon reveals in an interview with Empire. The film franchise, a horror genre hybrid of sorts that puts an irreverent self-parodying spin on the Groundhog Day-esque concept of time-looping, became a surprise hit upon the arrival of 2017’s original Happy Death Day, which grossed $125.5 million worldwide off a microscopic $4.8 million budget. Yet, 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U wasn’t quite as impactful with $64....
