Ghosts (UK) has just finished its fourth series on BBC One, and Ghosts (US), the American adaptation, is a few episodes in to its second season on CBS. Both series offer a mix of dry humour, black comedy, and real warmth in their characters. Both shows can make you laugh and cry within the space of a few minutes as they swing from comedy to tragedy and back again. But there are a fair few differences between the two that remind us of some of our differences in both the history of the two countries, and the humour....

As messages to the public go, the one taped to the door of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, next door to Whitby Abbey in the UK, is polite but conveys a muffled sense of exasperation: “Please do not ask staff where Dracula’s grave is as there isn’t one. Thank you.” In August, writer Kevin Meagher posted his widely shared photo of the sign on Twitter, from where it was picked up by local and national press....

The gamble paid off. Guardians of the Galaxy became a gigantic hit. In a series of photos from Instagram user atlanta_filming, we can see various pedestrian objects such as police cars and advertising that appear to be from Earth. But if you look closer, you’ll notice that the writing on these objects belongs to a language not found anywhere on Earth. Even more curious are the photos of extras, who appear to be animals in humanoid form. While some on the internet have cracked the language to discern the word “Counter” written on various signs, many long-time comic book readers did not have to go that far....

What is less known about Carpenter, however, is that he’s also a massive Godzilla fan. Going back to when he saw the American version of the original 1954 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956), during its original release, Carpenter has had a lifelong affinity for the giant kaiju movies that came out of Japan, particularly those released by Toho Studios. So it’s a bit weird to see them suddenly shift to his mainstream comic self. Up to Avengers: Endgame, the only specific bit of Hawkeye taken from the regular comic continuity is that he started dressing as Ronin for a time. Now he’s starring in a Disney+ series that takes a ton of inspiration from the Matt Fraction and David Aja comic run and they’re really going headfirst into his regular Marvel Comics history....

Super-archer Clint Barton — played in five MCU films (counting his debut, a cameo in Thor) by Jeremy Renner — was originally slated to get his own spotlight movie. But somehow over the course of several years, the idea morphed into a TV show, focusing on the relationship between Barton and the newly introduced Kate Bishop, a young woman who eventually takes up the Hawkeye mantle. “When we first started talking about it and developing Hawkeye, it was supposed to be a feature,” says Trinh Tran, executive producer of the show, which will now run for six episodes on the Disney+ platform....

Deadline was the first to report HBO has made a deal to develop a Hellraiser TV series with some big names attached, including David Gordon Green at the top of the list. Green became a horror genre darling after successfully rebooting Halloween for its 40th anniversary in 2018 with a box office hit that brought Jamie Lee Curtis home to the franchise. And he’s now signed on to direct the Hellraiser pilot about Cenobites and Hellworlds as well as several more episodes of the show should it be ordered to series....

Instead, they’re dispersed around the home and plugged into separate devices. That may be largely so, but it’s not the whole picture. In 2017, Ofcom reported that 70% of UK families still watch a shared TV programme at least once a week....

Released back in 1990, no one really knew what to expect from this low-budget family comedy about a boy forced to defend his house from a pair of bungling burglars after being accidentally left behind from a family holiday. Yet Home Alone is one of those rare examples of all the stars aligning in Hollywood to create something special. It’s a truly unique Christmas film, both feel-good and immensely funny, rivalled only in that respect by Will Ferrell’s Elf....

House of the Dragon Episode 8 Given its outsized cultural status as a fantasy epic and a prequel to a larger text, there are many easy comparisons that can be made between House of the Dragon to both Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. I’ve largely avoided those comparisons in reviews thus far because this show deserves a chance to stand on its own two dragon feet....

With the first season of House of the Dragon set to end this weekend, there’s no shortage of theories circulating the internet as fans pick apart scene after scene trying to predict the big reveals and twists that the series and its predecessor Game of Thrones are known for. A recent theory based on a scene from the penultimate episode “The Green Council” suggests that Alicent’s (Olivia Cooke) son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) might not be the father of Helaena’s (Phia Saban) children after all....

Peace was never an option for Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). It was always obvious that a civil war between the Blacks and the Greens was coming on House of the Dragon. Stories about happy mixed families who learn to co-exist with one another is not really George R.R. Martin’s whole vibe. Not only that but the show’s producers were upfront that the series would be covering the event know as the “Dance of the Dragons” before the first episode even aired....

Fan backlash comes with the territory of shows like House of the Dragon. Not only does it continue the adaptation of a beloved series by author G.R.R. Martin, but it comes after a largely disappointing final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Despite some unconventional choices, including a mid-season time jump that saw series leads Milly Alcock and Emily Carey replaced by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke as older versions of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, there’s one genuine fan complaint that showrunner Ryan Condon cannot ignore....

Although the Warrens mainly bookend the new film — which is centered about their daughter Judy (Mckenna Grace) and two friends as they battle the hideously evil title doll — Farmiga tells us in the video interview below that it’s fun to slip back into Lorraine’s skin: “The danger is to get too comfortable in these roles,” says the actress. “But Lorraine — even the little time we spend with Lorraine, her presence is so formidable and so specific, that just always stays with me....

While we’ve yet to see footage from the new animated series, and WB has only released a single piece of art that teases a Golden Age-inspired cape and cowl, the Caped Crusader creative team some time at DC Fandome 2021 to outline their vision for the new series. In short, the show sounds as close to Batman: The Animated Series as we all expected, but it isn’t an carbon-copy revival or even a direct sequel....

And, as a result, it exploded into the pop culture mainstream like a glitter bomb, driving droves of new readers to the Julia Quinn series of books on which the series is based and making the period drama, as a genre, cooler than it had been in a very long time....
